Storytellers Summer Grief Camp and Paid Volunteer Positions
Summer Grief Camp Description
Chicago Survivors’ Summer Grief Camp is a unique and supportive environment designed to help young individuals, ages 5-18, navigate the complexities of grief and trauma. Held over three weeks in mid-July to early August, the camp operates three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) from 9 AM to 2 PM. This camp provides a safe and nurturing space where children and teens can express themselves, build resilience, and find comfort among peers who have experienced similar losses. Paid Volunteer Positions
To support our Summer Grief Camp, we are hiring for several paid volunteer positions. These roles are crucial in ensuring a smooth and enriching experience for all participants.

- Camp Dates: Mid-July to early August
- Camp Hours: 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM (18 hours per week)
- Training: One day of paid training and a two-day setup team session.

Walk Fundraiser for Chicago Survivors
Join hands with Chicago Survivors and the Elmhurst community at our Walk Fundraiser on Saturday, September 30th, 2023, starting at 9:30 AM at Bethel United Church of Christ, 315 E St Charles Rd, Elmhurst, IL 60126.
We’re standing together, united in a common goal – to create a safer Chicago for everyone. In a city with an average of 500-700 homicides per year, thousands of family members are left in need of immediate crisis counseling, guidance, and trauma therapy. Together, we can make a difference.
Wear your brightest orange attire, spread the word, and invite your friends and family to this in-person event filled with unity, compassion, and solidarity.
Event Summary: Participants will complete 23 laps or 45 minutes, whichever comes first, in the parking lot (approximately three miles). This family-friendly event is open to children and adults of all ages, aimed at making Elmhurst & Chicago safer by honoring those lost, those who survive, and those we hope to keep safe in the future. There will be games and music for kids.

TREE OF LIFE: Survivors Workshops
Calling all adult Survivors! Chicago Survivors and DePaul University are teaming up to offer two 5-week series workshops starting in May. Using the Tree of Life psychosocial support tool, participants will draw their own tree, representing different aspects of their lives. Choose from Tuesday-only or Thursday-only sessions, and receive a gift card upon completing the full 5-week workshop. To register, please email [email protected] or call 773-456-4482.
What is the Tree of Life? The Tree of Life is a psychosocial support tool based on narrative practices. It is a tool that uses different parts of a tree as metaphors to represent the different aspects of our lives. It involves people drawing their own ‘Tree of Life’ in which they get to speak of their ‘roots’, their skills & knowledge, their hopes & dreams, and the special people in their lives.

Wednesday, September 29th Open Hearts for Broken Hearts – An Event to Benefit Chicago Survivors
We invite you to this immersive evening on the journey towards healing.
Chicago Survivors provides a wide range of support for families of homicide victims in Chicago. Last year, Chicago Survivors was called to the scene of 647 homicides and gave the families immediate and on-going grief and trauma counseling and other services for six months….all with a staff of only 25 people. In 2020, homicides were up 55% over 2019, and this year we are on the same pace.
